Tropical Storm Wutip is forecast to pass south of the Mariana Islands, bringing tropical storm-force winds to the island of Guam beginning Saturday, February 23. The storm, which is producing sustained winds of 110 km/h (69 mph) as of 10:00 (local time) on Thursday, February 21, is expected to strengthen to a typhoon with 195 km/h (120 mph), the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane. Strong winds, heavy rain, and heavy surf is expected for Guam and the Mariana Islands in the coming days, with the worst weather forecast from Saturday through Monday, February 25.
Individuals in Guam and the Mariana Islands are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate heavy rain, flooding, strong winds, and power and telecommunication disruptions, avoid oceangoing activity if conditions remain hazardous, and remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of water is enough to knock over an adult.
