Thousands of students, including members of the Union Générale des Etudiants Libres (UGEL), are planning to demonstrate on university campuses across Algeria on Tuesday, February 26, to denounce President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's plans to run for a fifth term. Protesters are expected to gather around 10:00 (local time).
Moreover, protesters have called for a three day nationwide general strike to start on Friday, March 1. Disruptions in transportation services and commercial activities are to be anticipated. Education services are also likely to be disrupted.
Further demonstrations are to be expected in urban centers throughout the country until the election, which will be held on Thursday, April 18. Clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.
Civil unrest may continue to mount in advance of the planned April 18 presidential election. In early February, the National Liberation Front (FLN) party officially presented President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's - in power since 1999 - candidacy in the elections.
Individuals in Algeria are advised to monitor the situation and avoid all demonstrations.
