Event

Teachers’ unions are calling for another round of nationwide strike to begin on Monday, March 11, to demand better working conditions, housing stipends, and new rules governing the nominations of education officials, among other issues. According to union leaders, the teachers plan to strike from March 11-15, March 18-22, and April 1-15, if the government does not meet their demands. Associated protests by teachers and students are possible during the work stoppage, particularly in Bamako and other major urban areas. While previous protests have remained peaceful, heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are expected around all demonstrations.

Context

Thousands of teachers participated in a protest march in Bamako on March 5, with similar demonstrations taking place throughout the country. Negotiations have been ongoing with the government in recent months, and officials have said that the two sides have agreed on six out of ten points. Teachers, lawyers, and health workers across the country held significant strikes throughout 201.

Advice

Individuals in Mali are advised to monitor the situation and avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. The security environment in Mali remains complex, particularly in the north and central regions. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
