Police remain on high alert throughout Christchurch as of 17:30 (local time) following two shootings at mosques in the city. New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush confirmed that at least four people have been arrested in connection to the attacks, which resulted in multiple fatalities; an official casualty count has not been released. According to Bush, multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were also successfully defused on vehicles used in the shootings. Officials have lifted the school lockdown throughout Christchurch but warned that a large police presence will remain throughout the city, particularly near the Al Noor Mosque on Deans Avenue and the Linwood area mosque. Local media are also reporting increased security measures at Christchurch International Airport (CHC). An investigation into the shootings is ongoing and police have warned residents maintain vigilance.
Individuals in Christchurch are advised to remain vigilant, avoid the area of the incidents, obey all instructions issued by the local authorities, and report any suspicious objects or behavior.
