The South African public utility company Eskom imposed rotational load-shedding measures on its national grid resulting in power cuts beginning on Thursday, March 14, due to a shortage of capacity. According to the Eskom board, the company implemented the measures to manage its reserves of diesel and water. Widespread power outages are expected until Sunday, March 17. Although outages are reportedly scheduled to reduce by Sunday, further power cuts are possible in the coming days and weeks.
Individuals in South Africa are advised to keep battery-operated devices fully charged whenever possible. In addition, individuals are advised to be cautious when driving or crossing streets if traffic signals are not functioning.
