Members of the Pollachi (Tamil Nadu state) trading community are planning to shutter their businesses and hold a protest rally on Tuesday, March 19, demanding court-monitored investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the Pollachi serial sexual assault and blackmail case. The shutdown and rally are expected after days of protests by students, political parties, and various social organizations demanding harsh punishment for perpetrators in the case. A heightened security presence and localized disruptions to business and traffic are expected near the demonstration site.
Four people are accused of sexually assaulting women in Pollachi and filming the act to blackmail them for money or for physical submission for over seven years. One of the suspects has reportedly been taken into custody and investigators have requested that all videos related to the case be removed from the Internet.
Individuals in Pollachi (Tamil Nadu state) are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations and protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
