Torrential rains in recent days have caused damages and at least 19 fatalities in Benguela province and the capital Luanda as of Wednesday, March 20. Heavy rain began on Monday, March 18, resulted in the deaths of at least 16 people in Benguela province, specifically the municipalities of Catumbela, Benguela, and Lobito. Another three people are missing and 20 others injured in the province and 29 houses were destroyed. On Wednesday, March 20, flooding in the capital of Luanda resulted in at least three deaths. According to emergency officials, Viana municipality was the most affected by the rains. Further rain and possible flooding is forecast for Luanda the coming days.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid flood-prone areas, prepare for lingering transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. Remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
