As of Wednesday, March 27, strong winds and heavy rainfall are forecast to persist over the coming days in Mauritius' eastern island of Rodrigues following the passage of the tropical Cyclone Johaninha the day prior, which caused road and air transportation disruptions, as well as power and communication outages throughout the island. Sir Gaëtan Duval Airport (RRG), also known as Plaine Corail Airport, located on Rodrigues island has reoponed as of March 27, however, the flag carrier Air Mauritius have announced it will resume normal operations once weather conditions have improved. Residual transportation disruptions are expected in the coming days following the passage of the storm.
Mauritius experiences an annual cyclone season from November through April, during which time tropical storms and torrential rain can result in significant material damage.
Individuals in or traveling to Rodrigues are advised to monitor local weather reports, postpone nonessential travel, and anticipate severe weather, power and telecommunication outages, and transportation disruptions (e.g. flight cancelations, road closures).
