Khulna jute mill workers announced fresh protests scheduled for Monday, April 1, through Thursday, April 4, during a rally in Khalishpur on Friday, March 29. According to the jute workers league leaders, the Bangladesh Jute Mill Cooperation (BJMC) has not met demands by a March 28 deadline. Protest activities include a red flag and stick rally on Monday followed by a 72-hour strike at jute mills in Khulna district from Tuesday, April 2, to Thursday. Road and railway blockades are planned from 08:00 to 12:00 (local time) during the protests. Clashes with security forces cannot be ruled out. Further protests and associated disruptions, including a heightened security presence and transportation disruptions, are possible in the coming weeks.
Jute mill workers have been protesting recently for increased job security and timely payment of wages. Around 50,000 people attended protests in early March.
Individuals in Bangladesh, particularly in Khulna district, are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate a heightened security presence and transportation disruptions, allow additional time to reach their destinations, and avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution.
