Event

Teachers’ unions are calling for nationwide protest marches to be held on Thursday, April 11, following planning and mobilization meetings of local union chapters on Wednesday, April 10, as part of an ongoing effort to negotiate for better working conditions and higher pay. Specific details regarding the demonstrations have not been released as of Monday, April 8; however, typical protest sites in Bamako include in the vicinity of the Bourse du travail (labor exchange), Monument de l'independence, and the Aci 2000 neighborhood. Further demonstrations cannot be ruled out. A heightened security presence and traffic disruptions are anticipated in the vicinity of protest sites. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators cannot be ruled out.

Context

The demonstrations follow several failed attempts by unions to reach an agreement with the government regarding wages and working conditions. Thousands of teachers have participated in nationwide strikes since early March 2019, and civil servants have held significant strikes since early 2018.

This most recent demonstration by teachers takes place amid a particularly tense political climate as it follows mass protests in Bamako on April 5.

Advice

Individuals in Mali, particularly in Bamako, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.

The security environment in Mali remains complex, particularly in the north and central regions. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
