On Thursday, April 11, the Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service (ICTS) launched a security operation targeting Islamic State (IS) cells in the Hamrin Mountains. The Iraqi security forces reportedly destroyed an IS-run media office in the region on Thursday. Similar raids targeting IS positions are to be expected in the area over the near term.

Context

While former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed victory over the Islamic State (IS) group in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq.
