India: India commemorates Amritsar massacre April 13

India Alerte de sécurité

Commemoration events planned in Amritsar on April 13 for 100th anniversary of massacre

TIMEFRAME expected from 13/4/2019, 12h00 until 13/4/2019, 11h59 (Asia/Kolkata). COUNTRY/REGION Amritsar, Jallianwala Bagh (Amritsar)

Commemoration events are planned for the 100th anniversary of the Amritsar (Punjab state) massacre, also known as the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, on Saturday, April 13. Hundreds of people participated in a candlelight vigil march on Friday night (local time), April 12, and a ceremony will be held on Saturday afternoon at the site of the massacre. A heightened security presence and large crowds are likely in Amritsar, particularly near Jallianwala Bagh.

In 1919, around 50 British Indian soldiers opened fire at a crowd of civilians in an enclosed space. At least 379 people, with estimates of more than 1000, died in the massacre.

Individuals in Amritsar, and India more generally, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, anticipate a heightened security presence and large crowds near Jallianwala Bagh, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and avoid discussing political subjects in public or on social media.
