Event

Officials announced the deaths of two suspected Maoist rebels, or Naxalites, in a security operation in Chhattisgarh state in the morning (local time) of Thursday, April 18. Members of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) were reportedly patrolling a forest in Dantewada district when they clashed with suspected rebels at 05:30, killing two and wounding another. Continued security operations are expected in Chhattisgarh and neighboring areas in the coming days. Militant activity is also possible, particularly in the lead up to elections. Areas of the state will vote in Indian general elections on Thursday and on April 23.

Context

Chhattisgarh is experiencing an ongoing insurgency conducted by Maoist rebels, also known as Naxalites. An estimated 6000 people have died in the past 20 years, though activities have decreased recently due, in part, to a security crackdown. Restrictions on the movement of foreigners are in place for some rural areas of eastern India, including parts of Chhattisgarh.

India is scheduled to hold nationwide general elections beginning in April. Rebels in Chhattisgarh have been known to increase attacks ahead of elections to delegitimize the process. Chhattisgarh holds elections on April 18 and 23.

Advice

Individuals in Chhattisgarh are advised to monitor developments to the situation, anticipate a heightened security presence, dhere to all instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. travel restrictions) and their home governments, and remain vigilant for militant activity, particularly if traveling to rural areas.
