Mali: UN peacekeeper killed in IED attack in Mopti region April 20

Mali Alerte de sécurité

One UN peacekeeper reportedly killed and four others wounded in IED attack on convoy in Mopti region on April 20

TIMEFRAME expected from 20/4/2019, 12h00 until 20/4/2019, 11h59 (Africa/Bamako). COUNTRY/REGION Mopti

A UN convoy en route between Douentza and Boni in the Mopti region was targeted by an improvised explosive device (IED) attack on Saturday, April 20. One peacekeeper was reportedly killed and at least four others were wounded in the attack. A statement by the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) confirmed the incident, saying that a Rapid Reaction Force was quickly deployed and the attackers were neutralized and detained. No further information was immediately provided. Further such incidents are likely in central Mali, including Mopti region, in the near term.

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite MINUSMA's presence, one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world. Since 2013, nearly 200 MINUSMA troops have been killed in Mali.

The security environment in Mali remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
