Several airlines, including Aerolíneas Argentinas and LATAM Airlines, have announced flight cancelations and delays for Tuesday, April 30, due to a planned general strike. LATAM canceled all flights to, from, and within Argentina and has asked passengers to reschedule their flights. Aerolíneas Argentinas and budget airline Jetsmart also announced all scheduled flights have been canceled for Tuesday. Further flight disruptions are expected throughout the country on Tuesday and possibly into Wednesday, May 1.
Several union leaders, led by Hugo Moyano, are calling for members to hold a general strike on Tuesday. Mayano is joined by leaders from mechanic, bank workers, teachers, and lawmakers unions. Significant transportation and commercial disruptions are anticipated during the strike. A ground transportation strike is also scheduled for Wednesday, May 1, as members of the Confederation of Argentine Transport Workers (CATT) conduct a work stoppage. The CATT strike is expected to affect rail, subway, and bus services.
Mayano has accused the CGT union confederation of failing to put pressure on President Macri and preventing thousands of workers from losing their jobs. CATT leaders have confirmed the union; will not participate in the April 30 strike.
Potentially impacted travelers are advised to confirm flight reservations before leaving for the airport and to contact their airline for additional information.
Individuals in Argentina are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate significant public transportation disruptions and increased demand for alternative modes of transportation, and avoid any related public demonstrations as a precaution.
