Benin: Nationwide general strike planned May 15

Benin Alerte de sécurité

CSTB union calls for nationwide general strike May 15 amid inauguration of new legislature; heightened security presence expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 12/5/2019, 12h00 until 15/5/2019, 11h59 (Africa/Porto-Novo). COUNTRY/REGION Benin

Event

The CSTB union has called for a 24-hour nationwide general strike on Wednesday, May 15, to denounce privatization efforts by the government, among other issues. Associated demonstrations are likely on Wednesday amid a heightened security presence. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Context

Sociopolitical tensions are high in Benin after election-related demonstrations and unrest broke out on May 1-2 following the April 28 legislative elections. Supporters of former President Thomas Boni Yayi clashed with government forces in Cotonou, resulting in at least two deaths. The inauguration of the new legislature is slated to take place on May 15 amid the planned general strike.

Advice

Individuals in Benin are advised to monitor developments to the situation, to anticipate service disruptions in affected sectors, and to avoid all protests due to the risk of violence.

On a more general note, some Western governments advise against travel to the far north of the country - including areas along the Nigerien and Burkinabé borders - due to security concerns.
