Popocatépetl volcano erupted plumes of ash and smoke on Thursday morning (local time), May 16, with prevailing winds carrying the cloud toward Puebla. Local media sources claimed some 20 communities were threatened with ashfall in Puebla state following two eruptions that took place in quick succession, at 08:17 and 08:31.
Consequent flight disruptions (e.g. delays and cancelations) are possible at nearby airports, especially if volcanic activity continues over the coming hours and days.
Individuals present in the affected area are advised to avoid the vicinity of the volcano, monitor the situation, adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and wear respiratory masks and covering clothing to protect skin from ashfall.
