Suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels reportedly clashed with Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) troops near Kilhewa village (North Kivu province) on Friday, May 17. According to local sources, at least nine civilians and one soldier were killed in the clashes along Mbau-Kamango road.
A heightened security presence is to be expected in the area over the coming days. Similar ADF attacks are possible in North Kivu province over the coming weeks.
The ADF is a Ugandan Islamist militant group that has traditionally been active in North Kivu province since the late 1990s. The group has also been blamed for attacks in neighboring Ituri province in recent months.
