Somalia Alerte de sécurité

Explosion kills one person in Mogadishu May 19; localized disruptions likely over coming hours

TIMEFRAME expected from 19/5/2019, 12h00 until 19/5/2019, 11h59 (Africa/Mogadishu). COUNTRY/REGION Mogadishu

An explosion outside the Djibouti school of Mogadishu on the evening (local time) of Sunday, May 19, reportedly killed one person. Local reports indicate an under-vehicle improvised explosive device (UVIED) detonated at approximately 19:00, killing the driver.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are likely in the capital over the coming hours.

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Individuals in Mogadishu are advised to avoid the affected area, monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, avoid all gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
