Workers in Bejaïa affiliated to the UGTA union have called for a 24-hour general strike to take place on Wednesday, May 22, to denounce the internal decision-making process of the union, perceived as going against the interests of the workers, and to express solidarity with the ongoing citizen protests in Algeria. Associated protests are planned nationwide, although exact locations and times were not immediately reported. The workers have also called for a national rally to take place outside the headquarters of the UGTA in Algiers on Wednesday, June 12.
A heightened security presence and traffic disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of all demonstration sites.
Individuals in Algeria, particularly in Bejaïa, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
