The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Tuesday, May 21, that an unprecedented 22,000 cases of dengue fever have been reported in Réunion so far in 2019. According to WHO, about 50,000 probable cases of the disease were reported between 2018 and April 2019. The outbreak has resulted in the deaths of 14 people since 2018.

Further spread of the outbreak is possible over the near term.

Context

Advice

Individuals present in Réunion are advised to take measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites (e.g. by wearing covering clothing, using insect repellent, and sleeping in a screened-in or air-conditioned room) and to eliminate possible mosquito breeding grounds on their properties (e.g. small pockets of fresh water, such as rainwater that has collected in cans, bottles, tires, flower pots, clogged gutters, etc.).
