On Monday, June 10, the Supreme Court in Brasilia decided it would reexamine former President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva's case in the coming months, who was convicted on corruption charges on July 12, 2017. Some allegations have highlighted inconsistencies in his conviction, possibly as a political tool to keep Lula and his Workers' Party (PT) out of the presidential elections that took place on October 7, 2018.

Protests are likely across Brazil over the coming days and weeks in the wake of the decision. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected near demonstration sites.

The decision comes after allegations emerged that the judge who convicted former President Lula collaborated with prosecutors to convict him. Lula was president from 2003 to 2011 and remains a popular figure among much of the population. Lula was convicted on corruption charges in July 2017 and again in January 2018, and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Former President Lula's supporters have long protested against all convictions.

Individuals in Brazil are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate a heightened security presence and localized disruptions should the protests take place.
