Supporters of former President Thomas Boni Yayi held protests in the cities of Tchaourou (Borgou department) and Savè (Collines department) on the night (local time) of Friday, June 14, into Saturday, June 15. At least two people were killed in Savè after security forces used live ammunition to disperse crowds that had erected barricades and blocked the main road. Similar fighting broke out in Tchaourou, where police officers also reportedly used live ammunition. According to government officials at least 30 officers were wounded in the clashes. Military officials reported on Saturday that roads in both cities have been reopened and traffic has resumed between Savè and Parakou.

Tensions remain high in the area and further disruptive demonstrations are possible in the coming days. A heightened security presence is expected in both cities and additional clashes between protesters and police officers cannot be ruled out.

Sociopolitical tensions are high in Benin after election-related demonstrations and unrest broke out on May 1-2 following the April 28 legislative elections. Protesters erected roadblocks in Tchaourou on June 13, leading to traffic disruptions on the Cotonou-Malanville (RNIE2) highway.

Individuals in Tchaourou and Savè are advised to monitor developments of the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, prepare for consequent traffic disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
