Nigeria Alerte de sécurité

Suspected Boko Haram militants kill at least 30 people in three suicide bomb attacks in Konduga (Borno state) June 16; similar attacks to be expected in northeastern Nigeria over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 17/6/2019, 12h00 until 18/6/2019, 11h59 (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Konduga

Event

Three suspected Boko Haram militants carried out suicide bombing attacks in Konduga (Borno state) on Saturday, June 16, killing at least 30 people and injuring over 40 others. The militants reportedly detonated their devices near a football retransmission center at approximately 21:00 (local time). The death toll may rise over the coming hours. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, although Boko Haram militants belonging to the Abubakar Shekau faction are highly suspected. Similar attacks are possible in Borno state, including in the Konduga area, in the near-term.

Context

The northeastern region of Nigeria (i.e. the states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa) is highly susceptible to attacks by Islamist militants, including from Boko Haram and Islamic State-West Africa Province (ISWAP). Though Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory, attacks have been on the rise since June 2017.

Advice

Individuals in Borno state are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
