Violent protests were reported in the departments of Quiché, Quetzaltenango, Escuintla, and San Marcos overnight (local time) from Sunday, June 16, into Monday, June 17, following general elections held Sunday. Protests led to poll closures in the cities of San Marcos (San Marcos department) and Zacapa (Zacapa department) after election officials were threatened.
More protests are to be expected over the coming days as the official election results are announced. An increased security presence, along with localized transportation disruptions, are likely around any demonstration sites, particularly in Guatemala City. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out.
Individuals in Guatemala are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all political gatherings as a precaution, anticipate possible protests and associated disruptions over the coming days, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
