At least six people have been killed and another 75 injured in Sichuan province after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit near the city of Yibin on Monday, June 17. The quake struck at approximately 22:55 (local time) at a depth of 16 km (10 mi). At least four aftershocks occurred within an hour of the initial earthquake, with magnitudes as high as 5.1 According to local officials, all of the fatalities and injuries were reported in Changning and Gongxian counties. Emergency responders have been deployed into the area and recovery efforts are ongoing as of Tuesday, June 18. Some roads and other infrastructure were damaged by the quakes and associated transportation disruptions are possible.
Additional aftershocks are possible in the region over the coming hours and days. Transportation and business disruptions are to be expected in affected areas.
Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor developments, prepare for aftershocks, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
