Members of the Extinction Rebellion (ER) environmental group are slated to stage demonstrations in Edinburgh until at least Thursday, June 20, as part of a five-day action which started on Monday, June 16. On Tuesday, June 18, participants are expected to gather from 11:00 to 13:00 (local time) in front of the Scottish Parliament. Roadblocks were reported across the city on June 17, leading to significant traffic disruptions; further such actions are likely in the coming days.
A heightened security presence and widespread transportation disruptions are to be expected until June 20.
ER is calling on the government to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2025 and to create a Climate Citizen's Assembly to oversee the changes against the climate crisis.
Individuals in Edinburgh are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and prepare for likely transportation disruptions.
