A group of unidentified gunmen robbed three workers in Bignona department (Casamance region) on Sunday, June 16. According to local reports, the victims were two Senegalese nationals and a foreign national. The incident occurred in the rural commune of Ounck near the village of Bouyal at approximately 10:00 (local time). At least four gunmen stopped the victim’s vehicle, stole their personal belongings, and hijacked their car. Similar attacks are possible in Casamance region in the near term.
Armed groups are known to operate in the Casamance region, including the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC), which has fought for the independence of Casamance since 1982. Tensions in the region increased in early 2018 after unidentified gunmen killed 14 people in the Bayotte forest on January 6.
Most Western governments advise against nonessential travel to the Casamance region (with the exception of zones around Oussouye and Cap Skirring, considered secure), as well as along the Malian and Mauritanian borders, due to security concerns.
