Event

Four suspected militants were killed during a security operation in the Shopian district of Jammu & Kashmir state on Sunday, June 23. Gunmen clashed with security forces in the Daramdora Keegam area of Shopian district in the early hours (local time) of Sunday. As of 11:00, the operation was ongoing as security personnel sought other suspects. Continued fighting and associated disruptions, including road closures and suspension of mobile internet services, are possible in the coming hours. Additional operations are expected in the near term; related demonstrations and clashes between protesters and security forces are also possible.

Context

Security forces have conducted numerous raids in Jammu and Kashmir state in recent weeks targeting alleged members of separatists and jihadist militant groups. Large protests in the region have also resulted in several deaths, injuries, and arrests.

Separatists have been fighting Indian rule in Kashmir since 1989. Around 70,000 people have been killed and many more injured in related violence, uprisings, and military crackdowns. Indian security personnel have been conducting frequent security operations and have clashed with suspected militants in recent weeks.
