The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) announced on Friday, July 5, that an indefinite strike launched by the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has been suspended and port operations have returned to normal. MWUN port workers went on strike on Wednesday, July 3, to demand the payment of all salary arrears. According to union leaders, the workers agreed to call of the industrial action to allow for talks between the government and major stakeholders. The union said the strike may be called back on depending on the outcome of the meetings during the week of Monday, July 8.

Context

A two-week strike notice issued by the MWUN expired on June 28. Union leaders announced the indefinite strike after claiming that there was no indication that the government was addressing their issues, including the payment of over one year of outstanding wages.
