Hong Kong: Police disperse protesters in Sha Tin July 14

Hong Kong, SAR China Alerte de sécurité

Thousands of people demonstrate in Sha Tin on July 14 before police use force to disperse crowds; protest ongoing and further clashes with police possible

TIMEFRAME expected from 14/7/2019, 12h00 until 14/7/2019, 11h59 (Asia/Hong_Kong). COUNTRY/REGION Sha Tin, Hong Kong

Several thousand people are protesting in Sha Tin (New Territories) as of the late afternoon (local time) of Sunday, July 14, to oppose a controversial extradition law. Participants marched from Chui Tan Street soccer pitch in Tai Wai to Sha Tin government offices. Activists on social media have said that police clashed with protesters and used pepper spray and batons to disperse the crowd. Anti-riot police carrying tear gas have also been deployed. The protest is ongoing as of 19:00 and further clashes between police and protesters are possible, as well as transportation disruptions in the area.

Several thousand people participated in a protest against the presence of Chinese traders in Sheung Shui (New Territories) on July 13 where police used pepper spray and batons to disperse protesters.

Protests and mass demonstrations of up to 2 million people have been held since June 9 in opposition to a controversial bill that would allow Hong Kong to extradite fugitives wanted in mainland China and other territories. Opponents claim the law would erode freedoms and be used to silence dissent and criticism.

Individuals in Hong Kong are advised to monitor the situation, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, refrain from discussing political topics in public or on social media, avoid all public demonstrations due to the risk of violence and arrest, and anticipate localized transportation and business disruptions and a heightened security presence.
