Anti-Brexit activists to march in London on July 20; heightened security measures and transportation disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 16/7/2019, 12h00 until 20/7/2019, 11h59 (Europe/London). COUNTRY/REGION London, United Kingdom

Event

Anti-Brexit activists have called for a march in London on Saturday, July 20. Participants plan to meet at Park Lane at 12:00 (local time) and then march to Parliament Square. Thousands of people are expected to attend the event.

A heightened security presence is expected in the vicinity of the protest, as well as transportation disruptions.

Context

On June 23, 2016, British voters surprised international observers after a slim majority (51.9 percent) voted "Leave" on a referendum regarding whether or not the United Kingdom should remain a member of the EU. Tensions following the vote have been widespread, and a number of demonstrations have taken place in European cities over the past years. The deadline for the UK to leave the UE is set to take place on October 31, 2019.

Advice

Individuals in London are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution, monitor the situation, anticipate localized disruptions, allow ample travel time, and obey instructions issued by the local authorities.
