At least six people were killed, and 16 others wounded, in an explosion at Kabul University on Friday morning (local time), July 19. A suspected vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) or magnetic improvised explosive device (MIED) detonated around 07:30 at the south gate of the university as students were arriving. A second device was reportedly found nearby. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected to persist for the coming hours.
Individuals in Kabul are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the area, liaise with their security partner, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home government.
The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
