A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck approximately 12 km (7 mi) north of Itbayat island (Batanes province) around 04:16 (local time) on Saturday, July 27. Around 07:38, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded a 6.4-magnitude quake about 19 km (12 mi) north of Itbayat. At least two smaller aftershocks were also reported in the area. Local officials reported some damages to buildings and homes in Batanes following the quakes. The mayor of Itbayat also told local media that at least five people have been killed. Recovery efforts are ongoing.
Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor developments, prepare for aftershocks, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
