Brazil Alerte de sécurité

Fighting breaks out in Altamira prison in Pará state on July 29, resulting in at least 52 deaths; associated protests possible

TIMEFRAME expected from 29/7/2019, 12h00 until 30/7/2019, 11h59 (America/Sao_Paulo). COUNTRY/REGION Pará state

At least 52 inmates died amid a prison riot at the Altamira prison in Pará state Monday, July 29. Local sources indicate prisoners from one cellblock invaded another part of the prison, attacking inmates and setting a large fire. Police report the riot involving rival gangs began at 07:00 (local time) and was dispersed at 12:00. A heightened security presence is to be expected near the prison. Associated protests denouncing the violence are possible nationwide over the coming days and weeks.

Fighting between rival gangs is not uncommon in Brazilian prisons. In 2017, almost 150 prisoners were killed during three weeks of violence in facilities in northern and northeastern Brazil. Moreover, in May 2019, at least 40 people were killed across four prisons in Manaus (Amazonas state).

Individuals in Pará state, and Brazil more generally, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
