Heavy monsoon rainfall affected much of Pakistan as of Sunday, August 11, leaving at least 17 people dead and inundating parts of Karachi. Notably, several deaths from electrocution - caused by the inclement weather - were reported in Karachi and Punjab province.
Lingering transportation and business disruptions and power outages are to be expected in flood-affected areas over the coming hours and days. Further heavy monsoon rainfall is to be expected in Pakistan through September.
Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather forecasts, prepare for transportation and business disruptions, and avoid flood-prone areas. In the event of flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
