Several civil society groups have called for a march in Mokopane (Limpopo province) on Wednesday, August 14, to demand the resignation of Mayor Andrina Matsemela. As of 10:00 (local time), police officers have blocked the main roads to the town. Protest participants have gathered since 08:00 at the Rabe Street bus stop, before heading to the municipal building. Media reports indicate that organizers are considering closing certain streets during the protest. A counterprotest in support of the Mayor has gathered since 07:30 on Nelson Mandela Drive.
A heightened security presence and localized transportation and business disruptions are expected in the affected areas.
At least 800 people participated in protests in Mokopane on August 1 and August 2 following the murder of two Africal National Congress members. Civil society groups submitted a memorandum to the Mogalakwena Municipality with a list of demands concerning the correct functioning of the municipality and the resignation of several officials.
Individuals in the Mogolakwena sub-region are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all demonstrations, and anticipate transportation and business disruptions.
