Event

Supporters of the Africa Action Congress (AAC) opposition party leader Omoyele Sowore are calling a protest in Abuja on Tuesday, August 14, to denounce his arrest and demand his immediate release. Protesters are expected to gather at the Unity Fountain at 11:00 (local time).

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of the protest. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible.

Context

Similar protests were held nationwide on August 5, leading to clashes between protesters and security forces, notably in Lagos, where security forces reportedly used live ammunition to disperse crowds.

Africa Action Congress (AAC) leader and politician Omoyele Sowore was arrested by Department of State Services officers in Lagos on August 3, ahead of the planned August 5 protests. The government has reportedly denied any connection between Sowore's arrest and the demonstrations. Africa Action Congress (AAC ) has called for mass demonstrations under the title "#RevolutionNow" to denounce the results of the February 2019 election, which they claim were rigged.

Advice

Individuals in Abuja and other urban areas are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.

The security environment in Nigeria is complex and is particularly challenging in the northeast and extreme south of the country due to the presence of armed groups, high crime rates, and the risk of kidnapping. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel to such areas.
