The National Airport Corporation (NAC) announced on Wednesday, August 14, that Buka Airport (BUA) in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville will be closed until September 12. According to the NAC, operations at BUA were suspended due to security concerns. A NAC security team reportedly found that the perimeter fence around the airport was incomplete and pedestrians and animals were able to freely cross the runway. During the closure, flights will be rerouted to Aropa Airport (KIE) in Kieta.
Potentially impacted travelers are advised to monitor developments to the situation, confirm flight reservations, and contact their airline for additional information.
