Security forces violently dispersed a protest that took place in the town of Oicha (North Kivu province) on Monday, August 19, using tear gas and live ammunition. Authorities report that three protesters were killed in the attack. The group was protesting insecurity in the region, which is plagued with frequent, deadly militia attacks and an ongoing Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic.

A heightened security presence and business and associated transportation disruptions are expected in the area in the coming hours and days. Further protests and violence cannot be ruled out over the near term.
