The Pakistani army claimed on Tuesday, August 20, that it had killed six Indian troops and wounded several others along the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region. This attack was reportedly in retaliation for India's ceasefire violation on Sunday, August 18, which left three civilians dead. This clash comes amid heightened tensions in Kashmir over India's recent revocation of Jammu and Kashmir state's special autonomous status.

Further exchanges of cross-border fire are possible over the LoC in the coming days.

India and Pakistan both claim sovereignty over Kashmir, which has been the focus of periodic violent conflict since 1947.

Following a cabinet meeting on August 5, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah proposed to parliament that Article 370 in the Constitution, which granted Jammu and Kashmir a special status, be revoked. He also proposed that Jammu and Kashmir be reorganized as a Union Territory with an Assembly, and Ladakh be a separate Union Territory with no legislature.

Individuals in Kashmir are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid the affected area, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

Some Western governments advise their citizens against travel to parts of Kashmir, notably including areas along the Line of Control (LoC), due to the significant risk of violence.
