A wildfire that has been raging across the eastern part of the island of Samos since Saturday, August 24, has forced the evacuation of some 1000 people as of Monday, August 26. Residents of Mesokampos and tourists staying at hotels on Glykoriza and Proteas beaches were evacuated over the weekend to Pythagorio. Over 700 firefighters were deployed in smoldering areas to prevent the further spread of the fire amid continuing high temperatures and strong winds. Officials stated on Monday that the blaze has largely been contained. Lingering transportation and business disruptions are to be expected in fire-affected areas.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor developments, avoid the vicinity of the blazes, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders).
