South Africa Alerte de sécurité

Taxi drivers block roads for a second consecutive day in protest in Pretoria Central Business District on August 28; traffic disruptions reported

TIMEFRAME expected from 28/8/2019, 12h00 until 30/8/2019, 11h59 (Africa/Johannesburg). COUNTRY/REGION Pretoria

Taxi drivers in Pretoria are protesting for the second consecutive day as of Wednesday, August 28, over drug-related activity led by suspected police officers, which eventually led to the killing of a taxi driver and prompted the protests. As of Wednesday morning (local time), drivers have parked taxis on main roads across the Central Business District (CBD), bringing traffic to standstill, and looted several shops. Police have been dispatched to try and unblock roads. Parts of the CBD are reportedly considered a no-go zone; associated traffic disruptions are expected in the coming hours.

Further related protests are anticipated in the coming days. Associated transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence are expected in the vicinity of the protests.

Individuals in Pretoria are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the affected areas, anticipate transportation disruptions, allow additional travel time, and abide by all security forces instructions.
