An improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in Jalalabad (Nangarhar province) on Tuesday, August 27, killing Nangarhar University's Dean of Literature, Massoud Nekbakht, and wounding three others. The IED was reportedly attached to Professor Nekbakht's vehicle in an apparent targeted attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of Wednesday, August 28.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in the area over the coming hours and days. Similar attacks are to be expected in Nangarhar province over the near term. 


Individuals in Jalalabad are advised to monitor developments, avoid the affected area, liaise with their security partner, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home government.
