According to local residents, unidentified gunmen abducted at least 50 people in Wurma (Katsina state) on the evening (local time) of Tuesday, August 27, following heavy gunfire in the village. Ransom requests have also reportedly been received. The police, however, stated that 15 women were instead abducted and ten were later released. The hostages' whereabouts remain unknown as of Thursday, August 29; search operations are ongoing in the area.
Further such attacks and kidnappings are possible in the region over the near term.
