Pakistan: Prime Minister Khan calls for nationwide rallies August 30

Pakistan Alerte de sécurité

Prime Minister Imran Khan calls for nationwide rallies across Pakistan August 30 amid Kasmir tensions; avoid all demonstrations

TIMEFRAME expected from 29/8/2019, 12h00 until 31/8/2019, 11h59 (Asia/Karachi). COUNTRY/REGION Pakistan

Event

Prime Minister Imran Khan has called for mass rallies across Pakistan on Friday, August 30, to show support for Kashmiri people. Demonstrations, known as "Kashmir Hour," are expected to take place from 12:00 to 12:30 (local time).  The move comes as Khan has called for weekly demonstrations ahead of the UN General Assembly to denounce the Indian government's move to revoke Jammu and Kashmir's special status.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected near all associated rallies.

Context

India and Pakistan both claim sovereignty over Kashmir, which has been the focus of periodic violent conflict since 1947.

Following a cabinet meeting on August 5, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah proposed to parliament that Article 370 in the Constitution, which granted Jammu and Kashmir a special status, be revoked. He also proposed that Jammu and Kashmir be reorganized as a Union Territory with an Assembly, and Ladakh be a separate Union Territory with no legislature.

Advice

Individuals in Pakistan are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

Some Western governments advise their citizens against travel to parts of Kashmir, notably including areas along the Line of Control (LoC), due to the significant risk of violence.
