Heavy rains on Sunday, September 1, left many residents without power in parts of Rio de Janeiro. Outages were reported in Barra da Tijuca, Recreio, and in Jacarepaguá, leaving main roads without traffic lights. Additional rain is forecast in Rio de Janeiro from Monday, September 3, through Friday, September 6.
It was not immediately clear when power would be restored to these areas.
Transportation and business disruptions are to be expected in the affected areas over the coming hours until power is restored.
Individuals in Rio de Janeiro are advised to monitor developments to the situation and local weather forecasts, anticipate flooding and mudslides along with transportation, business, electricity, and telecommunications disruptions, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. Be advised that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all food discarded.
