Brazil Alerte de sécurité

Brasilia and other cities to host Independence Day celebrations and education protests on September 7; heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 4/9/2019, 12h00 until 8/9/2019, 11h59 (America/Sao_Paulo). COUNTRY/REGION Brazil, Brasília

Several cities in Brazil will host Independence Day celebrations on Saturday, September 7, with the main event in Brasilia. The annual military-civic festival will be held in Brasilia around the Esplanade of Ministries, which will close as of 05:00 (local time). Rigorous restrictions will be implemented regarding circulation and a list of prohibited items has been published. Significant transportation disruptions such as road closures should be expected in the vicinity.

In São Paulo, a large festival will be held at the Ipiranga Museum as of 10:00 and will likely last throughout the evening. Associated celebratory events are expected in municipalities and cities across the country.

In addition to independence events, students have scheduled nationwide protests for Saturday to denounce proposed education budget cuts on federal universities and research institutions. This will be the fourth of its kind, the first dating back to May. There are several scheduled, including in Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Sao Paulo, and Minas Gerais, among many others.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions - particularly road closures - are expected in the capital and other cities.

Brazil is celebrating its 197th year of independence from Portugal.

Individuals in Brazil, particularly in Brasilia, are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate increased travel times due to high traffic and increased security measures, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Be alert and report any suspicious objects or behavior to the local authorities.
