Event

On Thursday, September 12, at least five people were injured in a stampede during the casket viewing for former President Robert Mugabe at Rufaro Stadium in Harare. According to local media reports, the stampede occurred when members of the public invaded the pitch where Mugabe's casket was stationed. Riot police have been deployed to the stadium to restore order.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the area over the coming hours.

Context

Robert Mugabe died in Singapore on Friday, September 6. Under Mugabe, Zimbabwe gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1980. He served as Prime Minister until 1987, then as the country's first president from 1987-2017.
