Violent protests erupted in Relizane after a 15-year-old boy was reportedly struck and killed by a police vehicle on Wednesday, September 18. According to local media reports, protesters blocked roads with burning tires and attempted to break into the city's police station before police dispersed the crowd using tear gas and live ammunition late on Wednesday night (local time). At least two protesters have died of wounds sustained during the police intervention as of Thursday, September 19.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in Relizane over the near term. Further protests are possible over the coming hours and days.  


Individuals in Relizane are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
